Gabions are a major part of hydroseeding, as they protect slopes and steam banks from the erosive forces of moving water. Gabion baskets can also be used retaining walls for slopes to divert the flow of water from eroding channel sections, to armor the bank.
Gabion basket wall prove helpful at places where vegetative stream bank protection is not sufficient, with flow rates over 6 ft/sec.These walls are suitable where:
- A retaining wall is needed for stabilizing the slope
- Where slope needs modification, but the heavy machinery can’t reach the site
- Soil bank’s vertical integrity requires a greater tensile strength to reduce stream bank sloughing
- There is sub-surface water movement and it varies from moderate to severe and may lead to erosion or can be damaging to other types of non-permeable structures.
